Mission

Our commitment is to develop human resources throught education and training programs, to provide and disseminate scientific information in nuclear and correlated areas, aiming to project the IPEN in a national and international way.

IPEN Brazilian Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree and the Master of Science degree in the Nuclear Technology Program, established in 1976. Since then, the Institute has been qualifying high level Brazilian and Latin America professionals, on nuclear academic and technological fields. In association with the University of São Paulo (USP), the largest institution of higher education and research in Brazil, and the third in size in Latin America, IPEN Postgraduate Program is offered in three areas:

  • TNA Nuclear Technology: Applications
  • TNM Nuclear Technology: Materials
  • TNR Nuclear Technology: Reactors

The Brazilian Higher Education Coordinating Office (CAPES) has a three-annual evaluation process applied to all Brazilian postgraduate courses. Levels 6 and 7 are granted only to those programs having high level academic performance and internationally recognized expertise. The Postgraduate Program on Nuclear Technology maintained the grade 6 on the CAPES evaluation, comprehending the period from 2001 to 2003, supported by its outstanding performance (TAB.1)

IPEN has started, since 1999, the Professional Master Program on Lasers in Dentistry in partnership with the Dentistry Faculty of USP, in order to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about lasers and their applications for the dentistry community. Besides, to enable them to use the laser in their clinical treatments with the latest accepted laser technology is a purpose of the program. The CAPES evaluation granted grade 5, the highest for the professional master program category. (TAB.2) presents the performance of this program, for the considered period.

Recognized internationally for its high level education program, IPEN is offering undergraduate disciplines addressed to the students from the University of São Paulo. Since 2000 a number of 25 disciplines are part of an optional curriculum and has been offered to undergraduate students, from different units of the University. The number of effectively given class and the number of registered students is presented in (TAB.3).

IPEN has Scholarship Programs for graduate and undergraduate students. The total number of awarded scholarships during the considered period is presented in (TAB.4).

IPEN has offered lato sensu graduate programs, since 2002, using its major nuclear science and technology facilities and expertise, to attend the needs of the Brazilian society. Education in nuclear sciences and related areas is in the mission of IPEN. Conscious of this task, the maintenance and transference of the accumulated knowledge in the nuclear area in the country, to the society, through educational programs, is one of the main concerns of the institution.
