IPEN - Short profile

       The Institute for Nuclear and Energy Research - IPEN is a Government of State of São Paulo owned institution, associated to the University of São Paulo - USP and supported and operated technical and administratively by the National Nuclear Energy Commission - CNEN, a federal agency of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

       The Institute, founded in 1956 with the main purpose of performing research and development in the fields of nuclear energy and its applications, is located at the campus of the USP, in the city of São Paulo, in an area of nearly 500.000 square meters.

       At present with a staff of about one thousand of professionals, about 40% with Post Graduate degree, is recognized as a national leader institution in areas like, radiopharmaceutics, industrial applications of radiation, research nuclear reactor operation and utilization, material science and technology, laser technology and applications and also in nuclear technology education with its pos-graduation program in Nuclear Technology, conducted a association with the USP, one of the best in the country, awarded with high international level by the CAPES, the national agency of the Ministry of Education.

       In these almost 50 years of activities the Institute has played important and strategic role in the different brazilian science and technology scenarios.

       In the year of 2002, in order to enhance the capacity of manage the diversity of research and development areas, emerged from the IPEN 1998 strategic plan, a new internal organizational structure was established.

       From an essentially vertical structure, IPEN works now with an organizational structure that identifies only two levels, one for strategic and political issues and for taken of the decisions, represented its Technical and Administrative Council - CTA and another one for the executive and operational actions, for what all of the institutional ongoing research, development and innovation activities were regrouped and setting new Research and Development Centers, working as business units.

       For the activities relating to nuclear and radiologic aspects the IPEN conducts a rigorous program of radiological control and nuclear safety that comprises personal and environmental monitoring and radiological emergency assistance.

       The progress and main outcomes of the activities that have been conducted in the R&D Centers, in the domain of the nuclear energy, its applications and in other correlated and non correlated areas, of strategic, economic and social value are viewed in this report.
